Miss Guided

Judy Greer – Miss GuidedOkay, so way back after the first episode, before anyone knew what it was, I blogged that Lost was a must-watch show and was going to be huge. Then, I basically started a campaign here telling everyone to watch 30 Rock. After a rough first-season, people finally started coming around and Tina Fey & co. are finally getting the recognition that show deserves.

Well, I’m here to tell you about Miss Guided, a new show on ABC, that I absolutely loved after only one episode. Miss Guided stars Judy Greer, best known as Kitty on Arrested Development, as a high school guidance counselor with tons of personal and self-esteem issues. I was laughing throughout the entire show at the breath-of-fresh-air writing and Judy’s wonderful comedic delivery. This is just one of those shows that after only 22 minutes I knew I was watching something special.

Now I urge everyone to get their ass in front of the TV (or set your DVR) and give this show a chance. If there’s one thing I don’t do, it’s recommend shit shows to people.

Miss Guided is moving to it’s regular time slot this week, which will be Thursday at 8pm. Don’t let this show disappear, because if there’s anything lacking on television these days, it’s quality scripted comedy.

Stuff White People Like

Props to my friend Kenny for showing me this. He described it as the “Site of the Day” but this  is without a doubt the site of the YEAR. Someone needs to turn these entries into a coffee table book ASAP.

Be sure to check out their thoughts on indie music and Apple products. Comedy genius.

Volume 1 – She & Him

The minute I heard that Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward were teaming up for an album I was delighted. Normally, the thought of actor-turned-singer throws up a warning flag, but not with Zooey. She’s always had this indie-darling aura around her and she’s always been one of my favorite characters on Weeds (one of the best comedies on TV). Besides, if M. Ward likes her enough to make a record with her, how bad could she be?

After what seemed like an eternity, the album, titled Volume 1, is finally out and I am in love. Zooey handles most of the heavy lifting vocally with M. Ward lending his voice a tiny bit during the record’s second half. Zooey’s voice has a very doo-wop throwback sound twinged with a bit of country flare.

There is no doubt in my mind that She & Him is going to find a way high up on my end-of-the-year “best of” list.

The Whigs – Mission Control

So I briefly touched on the brilliance that is The Whigs a few days ago when they I saw they were playing Conan, but feel the need to elaborate again how much I love their latest album Mission Control.

This is just a flat-out great indie rock record. From start to finish there is not one skip-worthy song and my only complaint with the album is that it’s kind of short clocking in at a little over 37 minutes. (I guess that’s not THAT short, but it just goes very quickly – that’s a good thing!) They are often compared to Paul Westerberg, and I can see some similarities, especially with their first record Give ‘Em All a Big Fat Lip.

Check out the video for their latest singled “Right Hand On My Heart” and download the mp3 here.
