R.I.P. LeRoi Moore

I first became a Dave Matthews Band fan right around the time Crash was released. I was given free tickets to see the band play at Madison Square Garden when I was in high school and the only reason I accepted was because Soul Coughing was the opening act. Prior to seeing them live, I wrote DMB off as “hippie shit” and never gave them a second listen. What I saw on stage that night blew me away.

If you could hand pick a group of some of the most talented musicians on Earth and put them on one stage, you would have The Dave Matthews Band. Every cog in this group has a mastery over their instrument rarely found in popular music today. One of the biggest cogs in this well-oiled machine was LeRoi Moore, in both size and importance.

LeRoi Moore never ceased to amaze. His talent on brass and woodwinds was one of the biggest contributors to DMB’s trademark sound. LeRoi passed away due to complications from an ATV accident he suffered in June. His death is a tragic loss to the music world and to fans like myself who stood in amazement every time he put his lips to an instrument.

For those of you not familiar with DMB or simply as close-minded as I was at one point, I urge you to listen to a live show or listen to an album. Dave Matthews Band is not fairly represented by their singles. Any fan will tell you the true magic from this group comes from their album cuts.

For your listening pleasure, here is the beautiful closing track off of Under the Table and Dreaming called #34. It is a great showcase to the talent of Mr. LeRoi Moore.

    Wow, that’s crazy…

You’re def. the one who got me into DMB, I haven’t listened to them as much since college, but hearing songs like #34 make me wonder why not. It’s really very beautiful music.

Perfect song too to show LeRoi Moore’s talents too.
