Kate Nash - Made of Bricks

Kate Nash - Made of BricksI can’t tell you why I love Kate Nash. If I try to describe her to people, I usually say that she sounds like a mix of Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse and Regina Spektor. With the exception of Regina, whom I adore, I absolutely loathe the other two. That is why I find it very strange that I can’t stop listening to Made of Bricks!

Kate’s lyrics are what best draw the Lily Allen references to me. Her witty, sometimes potty-mouthed story-telling work for her, unlike Lily, who I feel sings and says things just for shockKate Nash = So Hot! value. Quite a few of her songs are very heavy on the syncopated piano, which create immediate visions of Ms. Spektor dancing around in my head, while her use of throwback horns and rhythms scream Amy Winehouse. Throw in a little Mike Skinner phrasing and dialect and you’ve got yourself a Kate Nash. (It also doesn’t hurt that she’s very, very pretty in a Jenny Lewis-esque way.)

I almost feel bad describing Kate as such a conglomerate, as she’s really a breath of fresh air. I will be shocked if she doesn’t blow up in 2008 on the strength of her debut album, Made of Bricks.
